What is an APP scam?
An APP scam occurs when someone convinces you to send money under false pretenses, such as paying for a product or service that isn’t real or sending funds to someone pretending to be a trusted contact. These scams can be very convincing, impacting many individuals and businesses each year.
The APP Scam Code & how it protects you
The APP Scam Code will apply to payments made on or after 7 October 2024. This code establishes clear guidelines for banks and payment service providers to follow when handling authorised push payments. It ensures that customers receive fair treatment and support if they fall victim to a scam.
If you are affected by an APP scam, following the code's guidelines and reporting the incident quickly will allow you to be fully reimbursed for any lost funds. This means you can feel confident knowing there are protections in place to help you recover your money.

We’ll get in touch within 5 working days with an update or a decision on your claim.
If we recover all your money, we’ll return the full amount to you. If we’re unable to recover it all, we’ll let you know if you qualify for reimbursement of the remaining amount.
If we need more time to investigate, we’ll inform you and may request additional details. In this case, we aim to make a final decision within 35 working days.
Fraud prevention tips
Protecting yourself from APP scams is easier when you stay cautious. If someone asks you to send money, especially out of the blue, take a moment to verify the request. Contact the person or business directly using contact details you trust, not the ones provided in the payment request.
Always double-check bank details before sending any money, and remember, scammers often try to create a sense of urgency. Don’t feel pressured—take your time to ensure everything is legitimate.
